Reasons for the Cross (Part 1): Covenant

Feb 22, 2026    Werner Swart

This powerful message takes us on a journey through Scripture to discover why the cross was necessary, and the answer is breathtaking: relationship. From Genesis to the New Testament, we see God's relentless pursuit of communion with humanity. We were created in the image of the Trinity—a God who exists in perfect community and love—and we carry within us an innate capacity for deep relationship. When sin broke that fellowship in the Garden, God immediately began working to restore it. Through Abraham, He established a covenant promising that all families on earth would be blessed. Through Israel, He declared His desire for a treasured possession, a holy nation. But the old covenant was broken repeatedly by human failure. Then came the promise in Jeremiah of a new covenant—one written on hearts, not stone tablets. At the Last Supper, Jesus declared that His blood would seal this new covenant. The cross wasn't just about forgiveness or heaven; it was about restoring the relationship God has always longed for. He chose us first, pouring out His blood for many, and now we have the privilege of choosing Him back. This isn't about religion or church membership—it's about living in intimate fellowship with the Creator of the universe, experiencing a connection that defies explanation and fulfills us more than anything else ever could.
